As a Sydney mum, I know the winter school holidays can feel like a marathon. You want to create those magical family memories, but you also don't want to waste money on outings the kids find boring. I've been there!

That’s why I’ve put together my personal list of tried-and-tested favourites. These are the places so hands-on and captivating, your kids won't even realise they're learning. They're my go-to spots for a guaranteed great day out that saves my sanity and has the kids asking to go back.

Here are my six favourite museums for a fantastic family trip this winter.

1. Australian Museum

Australian Museum

This is the quintessential museum experience, supercharged for modern kids. Where else can you stand in the shadow of a towering T-Rex skeleton, then minutes later, explore the incredible world of First Nations culture? With a dedicated, hands-on kids' space and interactive displays everywhere, it’s a world of wonder under one roof.

Why You’ll Love It: It delivers pure, wide-eyed awe. The dinosaur exhibit is a guaranteed jaw-dropper, and the brilliant Burra play space for under-5s allows the littlest visitors to learn through sensory play.

  • Location: 1 William Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

  • Dates: Open daily.

  • Ticket Information: General admission is free for all ages. Fees apply for special exhibitions.

  • Family Tips: Head straight to the dinosaurs on Level 2 when you arrive to avoid the biggest crowds. The museum is very pram-friendly, with a great café for that much-needed coffee break.

2. Museum of Fire, Penrith

Museum of Fire, Penrith

Sound the alarm for a day of guaranteed fun! For any child who has ever marvelled at a passing fire engine, this museum in Penrith is a dream come true. It’s home to Australia’s largest collection of historic fire engines, from horse-drawn carts to giant modern tankers.

Why You’ll Love It: It’s impressively hands-on. Kids can grab a helmet and play in the junior firefighters' zone, learn about fire safety without a lecture, and even see a real fire pole. It’s a brilliant mix of heroic history and playful education.

  • Location: 1 Museum Drive, Penrith NSW 2750

  • Dates: Open daily.

  • Ticket Information: Adult $15, Child (2-13) $10, Family Pass $40.

  • Family Tips: There’s a great outdoor picnic area, so you can pack a lunch and make a day of it. The interactive exhibit on calling 000 is a fantastic and practical learning tool for kids.

3. Australian National Maritime Museum

Australian National Maritime Museum

Set a course for adventure at Darling Harbour. This museum isn’t just about looking at boats; it’s about exploring them. After checking out the fascinating indoor exhibits, you can step aboard a real-life navy submarine, a giant destroyer, and a magnificent 18th-century tall ship replica.

Why You’ll Love It: The thrill of climbing through a real submarine is unbeatable. It’s a genuine adventure that makes history feel tangible. It's not every day your kids can say they’ve explored the cramped quarters of submariners!

  • Location: 2 Murray Street, Darling Harbour NSW 2000

  • Dates: Open daily.

  • Ticket Information: Entry to the main building is free. We highly recommend the "See It All" ticket to access all the vessels. Adult from $25, Child from $15, Family passes available.

  • Family Tips: The submarine has tight spaces and ladders, so it’s best for kids aged 5 and up. The fantastic nautical-themed playground right outside is the perfect spot to burn off any leftover energy.

4. Museum of Sydney

Museum of Sydney

How do you get kids interested in local history? Show them LEGO! Built on the very site of Australia's first Government House, this museum tells the story of our city with incredible models (including the First Fleet in LEGO bricks), giant video screens, and fascinating stories of the Gadigal people.

Why You’ll Love It: It brilliantly connects the past to the present. The LEGO models are a massive drawcard, cleverly drawing kids into the stories of Sydney's complex and fascinating history. It’s compact, making it an easy visit for little legs.

  • Location: Corner of Phillip and Bridge Streets, Sydney NSW 2000

  • Dates: Open Thursday to Sunday.

  • Ticket Information: Adult $15, Child (under 5 free) $12, Family $38.

  • Family Tips: Being just a short walk from Circular Quay, you can easily combine a visit with a ferry trip or a walk around the Opera House.

5. Hyde Park Barracks

Hyde Park Barracks

This isn't just a building; it's a time machine. At this UNESCO World Heritage site, you'll uncover the stories of the thousands of convicts who passed through its gates. Kids are given a headset and can follow the audio trail of real people—like young convict John Dodd—as they explore the historic building and see where they ate, slept, and worked.

Why You’ll Love It: It brings history to life in a personal and powerful way. The audio experience is brilliant for older kids (ages 8+), allowing them to connect with individual stories. Uncovering the history layer by layer feels like a fascinating treasure hunt.

  • Location: Queens Square, Macquarie Street, Sydney NSW 2000

  • Dates: Open Thursday to Sunday.

  • Ticket Information: Adult $24, Child (under 5 free) $18, Family $64.

  • Family Tips: The experience is self-guided, which might be challenging for very young children to follow. Allow at least 90 minutes to do it justice.

6. Sydney Tramway Museum

Sydney Tramway Museum

All aboard for a trip back in time! Located in Loftus, this charming museum is home to Australia’s oldest collection of trams, and the best part is, you can ride them. Your entry ticket includes unlimited trips on beautifully restored vintage trams that run along a historic track.

Why You’ll Love It: It’s a living, moving museum. The joy on a child's face as they hear the "clang clang" of the bell and feel the tram rumble along the tracks is priceless. It's run by passionate volunteers who are full of amazing stories about Sydney's past.

  • Location: Corner of Pitt Street and Rawson Avenue, Loftus NSW 2232

  • Dates: Open on Wednesdays and Sundays.

  • Ticket Information: Adult $25, Child (5-17) $15, Family Pass $70. Includes unlimited tram rides.

  • Family Tips: Pack a picnic to enjoy in the grounds. Check the tram timetable when you arrive to plan your rides, including the longer trip into the Royal National Park.
