Free and Low-Cost Fun
Illuminate Adelaide - City Lights
This is the big one. Illuminate Adelaide runs from 1-19 July and the best part for families is City Lights, a free city-wide trail of interactive artworks and dynamic projections that lights up nightly from 3-19 July. It's the largest free program in the festival, with more than 50 installations to wander between. Rug the kids up, grab a hot chocolate, and make an evening of it. There's no booking required for the free trail.
Cost: Free | Best for: All ages | Location: Adelaide CBD, nightly
Adelaide Botanic Garden
A classic Adelaide freebie that never gets old. The Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden was built with kids in mind - garden beds full of seasonal fruit and veg, a worm farm, bee hotels, and a big basket-weave dome that's perfect for storytelling. Pop in for an hour or pack a picnic and stay the morning.
Cost: Free | Best for: All ages | Location: North Terrace, Adelaide
Firstival at Libraries SA
Libraries right across South Australia join in the Firstival fun throughout July, with a packed program of kids' activities - think kids' yoga, costume workshops, cupcake decorating, silent discos and kite making. Check your local council library for what's on near you and book early, because the good sessions fill fast.
Cost: Free (some sessions require booking) | Best for: Ages 2-12
Himeji Garden
Tucked into the southern Park Lands, this serene Japanese-style garden is a lovely quiet spot to break up a busy week. There's a mountain-and-lake garden, a dry rock garden, and a water feature full of goldfish, ducks and turtles the little ones love to spot.
Cost: Free | Best for: All ages | Location: South Terrace, Adelaide
Animals and Adventure
Adelaide Zoo - Universal Kingdom: Ice Age
The zoo transforms after dark with Universal Kingdom: Ice Age, part of the Illuminate program. Towering illuminated woolly mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and Australian megafauna (including the giant diprotodon) come to life through puppetry and light displays. Sessions run Thursday 2 July - Sunday 19 July at 5:30pm, 6:30pm and 7:30pm.
Cost: From $37 general admission | Best for: Ages 3+ | Book ahead - sessions sell out
Woodhouse Adventure Park - School Holidays UNPLUGGED
Up in the Adelaide Hills, Woodhouse runs its UNPLUGGED program daily through the holidays for kids from Reception to Year Six. There's time on the epic Challenge Hill obstacle course, tube slide sessions, and themed activities to burn off all that pent-up energy. A brilliant fresh-air day out.

Rainy Day Winners
The Beachouse, Glenelg
When the weather turns (and in an Adelaide winter, it will), The Beachouse on the Glenelg foreshore is an all-weather lifesaver. The five-storey complex has giant slides, dodgem cars, mini golf, a carousel, a mini train and a huge arcade, plus a multi-storey play castle for the climbers. You can buy single ride tickets or a wristband, so it suits all budgets.
Cost: Pay per ride or buy a wristband | Best for: All ages | Location: Glenelg
BRIXPO 2026
LEGO-loving families, this one's for you. BRIXPO returns to Adelaide with six basketball courts filled with incredible fan-built LEGO displays. It's a proper jaw-dropper for kids and grown-ups alike, and a great indoor option if the forecast looks grim.
Cost: Ticketed - check website | Best for: Ages 3+
A Big Day Out
Glenelg Beach
Yes, the water's a bit brisk in July, but Glenelg is still a winner on a clear winter's day. There's a playground right on the beach, a splash pad near the train and beach entrance, and the tram ride from the city is half the fun. Fish and chips on the foreshore and you've got a proper day out for next to nothing.
Cost: Free (tram fares apply) | Best for: All ages | Location: Glenelg
Lights at Mawson
On from 17-19 July, Lights at Mawson is a gorgeous way to round out the holidays - an illuminated inflatable animal trail around the lake, a silent disco, live acoustic music, light-painting portraits, mini golf and interactive light games. A lovely low-key evening for the whole family.
Cost: Check website | Best for: All ages | Location: Mawson Lakes
School Holiday Survival Tips
Plan three things, do one. Over-scheduling the holidays is a fast track to meltdowns - yours and theirs. Leave plenty of room for pyjama days.
Book the popular stuff early. Zoo night sessions, library workshops and adventure programs sell out. A quick booking now saves disappointment later.
Layer up for the night events. Adelaide evenings get cold in July. Beanies, gloves and a thermos make all the difference at City Lights and Lights at Mawson.
Mix big days with quiet days. A huge outing followed by a slow day at home is the sweet spot for keeping everyone sane.
