15 Free Things to Do With Kids in Sydney This Winter

Jun 25, 2026

Winter in Sydney doesn't mean you're stuck indoors watching Bluey on repeat (though no judgement if that's your Plan B). The city is packed with free activities that'll get the kids out, burn off some energy, and — best of all — won't cost you a cent. Here are 15 of our favourites for winter 2026.

Outdoor Adventures

1. Explore the Royal Botanic Garden

Wrap up warm and wander through the gardens near the harbour. Little ones love the duck pond and the wide open lawns for running around. Pack a thermos of hot chocolate and make a morning of it. The gardens are open every day from 7am and there's no entry fee.

Best for: All ages | Location: Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney CBD

2. Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee

Yes, it's gorgeous in summer — but winter means fewer crowds and dramatic waves crashing against the cliffs. The 6km walk is pram-friendly in most sections. Stop at Bronte Park for the playground and a picnic. Dress in layers and bring snacks (because when don't you need snacks?).

Best for: Ages 3+ (or babies in a carrier) | Distance: 6km one way

3. Centennial Parklands Bike Ride

Centennial Park has dedicated bike paths, wide open spaces, and a pond where the kids can spot turtles and pelicans. BYO bikes or scooters. The Federation Pavilion area is great for a picnic lunch after your ride. The park is open sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year.

Best for: Ages 2+ | Location: Centennial Park, Paddington

4. Manly Dam Reserve Bushwalk

For families who love a bit of bushwalking, Manly Dam has several trails ranging from easy strolls to moderate hikes. Keep an eye out for lizards and kookaburras. The main circuit is about 7.5km, but there are shorter loops for little legs.

Best for: Ages 5+ | Location: King St, Manly Vale

Museums & Culture (Free Entry!)

5. Art Gallery of New South Wales

The new Sydney Modern building is stunning and completely free to visit. Kids love the tank gallery underground and there are regular free family trails and activity sheets at the front desk. The gallery also runs free kids' workshops during school holidays — book ahead as they fill up fast.

Best for: Ages 3+ | Location: Art Gallery Rd, The Domain

6. Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)

Free entry to all exhibitions. The rooftop terrace has incredible harbour views and the gift shop is great for browsing. They run free family Sundays with art-making activities. Check their website for the current program.

Best for: Ages 4+ | Location: 140 George St, The Rocks

7. Barangaroo Reserve

This harbourside park was built on a former container terminal and has beautiful native plantings, walking paths, and harbour views. It's a lovely spot for a winter walk and there are often free community events and markets on weekends.

Best for: All ages | Location: Barangaroo, Sydney

Rainy Day Winners

8. State Library of NSW — Free Exhibitions & Story Time

The State Library runs free exhibitions year-round and their children's area has story time sessions, craft activities, and a cosy reading nook. It's one of the best-kept secrets for rainy day entertainment in the city. Check their events calendar for session times.

Best for: Ages 0–8 | Location: Macquarie St, Sydney CBD

9. The Rocks Discovery Museum

A small but brilliant free museum tucked away in The Rocks. Kids can explore archaeological finds and learn about Sydney's history through interactive displays. It's compact enough that little ones don't lose interest.

Best for: Ages 4+ | Location: Kendall Lane, The Rocks

10. Marrickville Library — LEGO Club & Craft

Loads of Sydney libraries run free kids' programs during winter. Marrickville Library's LEGO Club is a standout. Check your local council library for what's on — there's usually story time for babies and toddlers, craft for primary schoolers, and coding clubs for older kids.

Best for: Varies by program | Location: Check your local council library

Community & Markets

11. Carriageworks Farmers Market

Every Saturday morning, this indoor market is full of local produce, baked goods, and free samples (the real kid magnet). The space is pram-friendly and undercover, making it perfect for a winter weekend outing. Let the kids pick out some fruit and call it educational.

Best for: All ages | Location: 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh | Saturdays 8am–1pm

12. Playground Hopping — Sydney's Best Free Playgrounds

Sydney has some incredible free playgrounds that are worth a special trip. Our top picks for winter: Pirrama Park (Pyrmont) has a brilliant water play area and harbour views. Blaxland Riverside Park (Newington) has a huge treehouse, flying fox, and water play. Livvi's Place (Five Dock) is fully inclusive with accessible equipment.

Best for: Ages 1–10

13. Watch the Planes at Sydney Airport

Head to Shep's Mound near the airport for a front-row seat to planes landing and taking off. It's free, there's parking, and kids are absolutely mesmerised. Bring a blanket and some snacks.

Best for: Ages 2+ | Location: Airport Dr, Mascot

14. Ferry Ride to Parramatta

Okay, technically not free — but if you have an Opal card, kids under 4 travel free and the family fare caps are very reasonable. The ferry from Circular Quay to Parramatta takes about an hour and passes through beautiful harbour scenery. Pack a lunch and enjoy the ride.

Best for: All ages | Route: Circular Quay to Parramatta

15. Luna Park — Free Entry (Rides Extra)

Entry to Luna Park is free — you only pay for rides. So you can wander around, soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the harbour views, and let the kids watch the rides before deciding what to spend on. The Coney Island funhouse is only a few dollars and is brilliant for kids of all ages.

Best for: All ages | Location: 1 Olympic Dr, Milsons Point

Planning Your Winter Adventures

Layer up! Sydney winter means mild days (12–18°C) but chilly mornings. Dress in layers and always pack a rain jacket — winter showers can appear from nowhere.

Pack snacks. Always. Every time. More than you think you need.

Check opening times. Some outdoor venues close earlier in winter. A quick Google before you leave saves disappointment.
